It is well known that the field of dermatology involves dealing with the skin, the largest organ in the body, but what is dermatology really about? Let us dive into what dermatologists do and why they are so important!
Ever since I was little, I have always wanted to learn more about dermatologists mainly because of my favorite reality TV show: “Dr. Pimple Popper.” I was very fascinated by this show and wanted to learn more about behind-the-scenes. Dermatology primarily encompasses the skin but also includes almost all extraneous structures including hair, nails and mucous membranes.
But, what exactly do dermatologists do? Well, one main role of dermatologists is diagnosing and treating patients with health issues. These doctors examine patients, order lab tests and, based on the results, prescribe medicines or perform procedures. Dermatologists focus on a plethora of procedures ranging from biopsies and label therapy to chemical peels and cosmetic injections.
In addition, dermatologists work with various cosmetic disorders and pathological disorders. Some cosmetic disorders include hair loss, scars and wrinkles, while more deadly disorders include skin cancer and toxic epidermal necrolysis. Skin cancer progression may be lethal and is difficult to predict. However, dermatologists are well-trained to identify skin cancer before it is too late, helping aid this issue.
Dermatologists not only increase the confidence of their patients but also protect them from harmful diseases. Overall, dermatology is a wide field consisting of many components ranging from cosmetics to terminal illnesses. Shows like “Dr. Pimple Popper” do a great job of providing viewers with a glimpse into the profession’s applications; however, they do not nearly cover all the responsibilities of dermatologists.
